Content locking is a blogging technique which enables business bloggers to gain some extra control over access to their blog content.
Typically, a content-locked blog post will show the first paragraph or two of the content and a “read more” link. After clicking the link, readers will be requested to complete an action before they can access the rest of the content.
For example, they may be asked to share the post on social media or opt in to the blogger’s mailing list in order to unlock the blog post.
The two steps to success with content locking are:
Step #1. Create compelling content which visitors will want to read…
Step #2. Make the step between clicking the “read more” link and accessing the content as quick and easy to complete as possible.
If you run a WordPress blog, there are some cool content-locking plugins to help you with “Step #2”.
Plugin #1: Optin Lock
Optin Lock is only compatible with AWeber, iContact, MailChimp, GetResponse, Mad Mimi and Interspire Email Marketer, so if you use another autoresponder, such as Trafficwave or Rocketresponder, then this is not a suitable option for you.
At the time of writing, the basic version is available for $49.
Plugin #2: Facebook Like Lock
Facebook Like Lock is a free plugin. As the name suggests, this plugin enables you to trade your content for Facebook “likes.”
You can write your own lock message which will be seen by your visitors when they try to access your content.
You can also use shortcodes to bracket any section of content you wish to lock away, so you could lock away a single “key paragraph” or sentence in the middle of your content.
Plugin #3: OnePress Social Locker
If you want to let your visitors choose which social site they share your content on, One Press Social Locker is the plugin that will let you do that.
The free version lets your readers choose to share your content on Facebook, Twitter or Google +1.
The premium version adds LinkedIn and an option to subscribe to your YouTube channel.
